Unakoti

The Mystery Begins

Local legend says one crore gods once slept on
this hillside on their way to Kashi. Only one woke
before sunrise. The rest, the story goes, are still
here — turned to stone mid-dream, staring out
of a jungle wall.

Introduction

You hear Unakoti before you see it. Water, somewhere above you, falling through leaves
onto rock that has been wet for a thousand years.

Then the trees thin out, and a face appears. Nine metres tall. Eyes open. Carved directly
into the cliff, wearing a headdress of smaller figures, still holding an expression nobody has
been able to name.

And beside it, another. And another. A crowd in the rock, going up the gorge until the moss
swallows them.

A Little Deeper

Archaeologists date the carvings somewhere between the 7th and 9th centuries. Beyond
that, the record simply stops. No inscription names a patron. No text records a workshop.
No local dynasty claims it.

The style does not sit neatly anywhere either — the faces borrow from Bengal, from
Southeast Asia, from tribal traditions still practised in these hills. It looks like several worlds
passed through and each one left a hand on the rock.

Unakoti means ‘one less than a crore’. That the name itself is a headcount, and that the
headcount is impossible to verify, tells you how this place is remembered: by story rather
than by ledger.

It stays unknown because Tripura stays unknown. There is no highway, no
hotel strip, no famous photograph in circulation. For most of the year, the only footsteps here belong to
people who live in the valley.

tools, the quarry debris, or the settlement of the people who carved it.
